A couple at home one evening. “I can’t breathe,” says the woman. “She can’t breathe,” repeats the man. They rush to the hospital. What follows are heart-wrenching moments: she is in intensive care, while he sits in the waiting room, desperate and distraught. Eventually, life returns to normal, but the lovers’ shared journey has been forever altered.
*Rakastavaisten kuoro* (The Chorus of Lovers) captivates from the very first moments. Written and directed by the Portuguese Tiago Rodrigues, the play plunges the audience into the heart of a relationship between two people. It is a choral play, a lyrical narrative, in which a couple, in two voices, recounts the other’s encounter with death. Their versions, told side by side, are not entirely identical. The lives and memories of these two individuals are monologues that only occasionally turn into dialogue, coming together and then drifting apart. The play celebrates love, vitality, and the exceptionally strong bond that unites two people in a life-or-death situation.
On stage, the breathtaking Alma Pöysti and Elmer Bäck are a true revelation.
