One day, he wrote to his friend, a writer: “I’d love to bring your cancer to the stage.” These words are the starting point for a personal account of her experience with the disease. She writes about how the news of the tumor affected her, what she discovered, what she heard, what she took away from it, and what her body went through. She reveals her battle with stage 3 breast cancer: eight months of chemotherapy, surgery, sunken cheeks, cracked nails, and itchy scars. The narrative is told in the first person and addresses the audience directly, prompting each of us to reflect on our perceptions of illness and our fear of death.
The theatrical setup is simple: a narrator and a musician in dialogue. The narrator’s voice recites the text in a spoken-sung style, using powerful, incisive language full of raw energy, and makes the woman’s story their own through a subversion of genre, a fusion, a blending. *Munitions of Love* is “an offering to all those living with cancer—to draw strength, to fight, to share, to purge, to support, to not despair, to not turn a blind eye, to not be afraid of being afraid. And to love again and again.”
