Le Voyage dans l’Est
Published in 2021, Prix Médicis winner Le Voyage dans l'Est by Christine Angot is a return to the scene of the crime, to the very place where the father, for the first time, imposed an incestuous relationship on his daughter. On stage, six actors give voice, word for word, to incest, control, consent, shame and guilt.
Le Voyage dans l'Est is a return to the scene of the crime, to the very place where the father first imposed an incestuous relationship on his daughter. It describes the battlefield that consciousness has become. It's not a return, but an apnea dive into the city's scenery to reconstitute and reweave the threads of memory, to find the words to tell of the inner devastation, to cross the inner voices to express all the contrary feelings that never leave her. The stage is the place to hear this impulse, between life and death, confusion and light. The place of exposure. The place of courage and truth. The place of risk.
Stanislas Nordey loves these risks, and is not afraid to take on works that touch on human catastrophes, and for which literature tries to find a luminous way out, however tenuous it may be. His radical direction of the actors lets Christine Angot's words resonate loud and clear. Words that speak of incest, domination, consent, shame and guilt
