Du piment dans les yeux
Du piment dans les yeux is the intersecting story of Mohammed and Inaya, both of whom set off on the road in search of a better life. She's fleeing war, he's driven by an unquenchable thirst to learn and continue studying. From one sequence to the next, we follow the alternating journeys of these two young people as they confront our world and - without resignation - struggle to build a dignified existence for themselves.
Simon Grangeat constructs a play with a dark appearance. The author does not embellish their difficult living conditions, the personal and social pitfalls that prevent them from blossoming. The language is harsh, as are the images created. Without minimizing or exaggerating, it offers a quasi-documentary look that is dramatized by the presence of a chorus of voices that will accompany them along the way.
Du piment dans les yeux begins legally and ends without papers, begins under the skies of Africa and ends on the streets of France. In between: exiles, escapes, resourcefulness and, above all, the irresistible desire not to be subjected.
