Following Gone, Tamara Al Saadi continues her exploration of the myth of Antigone, that literary icon of resistance who has endured through the centuries and inspired numerous adaptations.
A variation on Antigone, Taire juxtaposes two teenage girls, both overwhelmed by the world that has been built around them. One is set against a mythological backdrop, whilst the other navigates our society, shaped by her experience as a child placed in care by social services.
Through Taire, the author explores the experiences of a teenager overwhelmed by the world around her, who can no longer envisage a future for herself. At the crossroads of social science research and theatre, the work of the author and director was informed in the run-up to the production by meetings and workshops with young people in hospitals and care settings. Against the backdrop of current events marked by environmental, geopolitical and social issues, and characterised by growing anxiety amongst teenagers, how do they perceive this female figure who stands up to paternal and political authority? How does this myth resonate at a time when the contemporary world is plunging the youngest among us into a state of bewilderment? How do they view their own powerlessness, their need to cry out in an impossible revolt?
