We, the heroes features actors who are above all petty and sublime men: they are lost, exiled, exhausted beings, on the verge of survival and aware of it, but still capable, with few means at their disposal, of crafting dreams, thoughts, poetry, with concrete or mental objects often closer to junk than to art. Noi, gli eroi takes on a universal, philosophical dimension from the very first account of the great and small ills of our art. It's not just another play within a play. As always with Lagarce, it's about love, fear and the spectre of old age, illness and death, and the war that destroys and revolves around us. In every word, almost obsessively, we perceive the author's unconditional love for characters, for actors, for ambiguity, for the plausible, for the unspoken, for backstage, for rehearsals.
