Music-hall
A singer and her two boys meet up one evening, probably like every other evening, in a rather shabby venue in a small provincial town. Waiting for a hypothetical audience, in a bittersweet reverie, between illusions and disillusions, they rehash and recall their faded glory, their heroic tours, their lost lives... Lonely heroes in love in a mocking world that no longer recognizes them.
Music-hall is a grotesque comedy: the funny tale of failure, the funny tale of what we wanted to be and weren't, or aren't anymore, the tale of what we see slipping away. Life is longer than our dreams, that's for sure! Lagarce looks on, with infinite delicacy and amused distance, at his itinerant, useless little troupe. But today, more than ever, shouldn't we celebrate the beauty of the useless, the derisory, the outdated?
Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to the Music Hall's Comedy!
The orchestra, it is said, was still playing as the liner sank peacefully but inexorably into the black waves.
