L'Apprentissage

Add to my favorites

When Roland Fichet commissioned a "birth story" from him in 1993, Jean-Luc Lagarce responded with a "rebirth story". In the first person, he recounts his return to life after being plunged into a coma, the rediscovery of his senses: hearing, sight, speech... right up to his first discharge from hospital.
Lagarce's view of the world he rediscovers is full of the irony and malice that keep him alive, and under his pen, the hospital becomes the site of a ferocious human comedy.
As with Le Bain or Le Voyage à La Haye, the autobiographical dimension of this monologue is obvious. Yet Jean-Luc Lagarce's writing cannot be summed up as testimony or even self-portraiture. Its strength lies in its language, vivid, meticulous and funny, which embraces the back-and-forth of the thought that is being invented.

Conceived last season in the form of a worksite, L'Apprentissage is now a show. Thanks to this first stage of work, we hope, Alain Macé and I, have matured and progressed to make the voice of "the one who tells" heard.
