Iphigénie à Splott
Nominated "best show" and "best performance" for the actress at the Prix Maeterlinck de la Critique belge in 2022, this rock and roll tragedy was one of the great successes of the Festival Off d'Avignon 2023. Author Gary Owen transposes the ancient heroine to Splott, a suburb of Cardiff in Wales, plagued by unemployment and insecurity. The incredible Gwendoline Gauthier plays Effie, a wild, rebellious, gossipy young woman who tells us about her drinking, her troubles and her joyless love affairs. Effie is also a kind-hearted person, ready to sacrifice herself for others like herself. One evening, she's given the opportunity to reinvent herself. Three musicians cadence her explosive monologue, chant the blows she takes and electrify her protests in a post-rock ambience. A hard-hitting show about precariousness and injustice, in which despair is transformed into infinite beauty.
