Boat people

Add to my favorites

Boat people is a vast writing and theater project that aims to explore the history and memory of "boat people", and their constitutive presence within the French population. The expression refers, of course, to the "boat people" who came from Southeast Asia in the second half of the 1970s, but also more broadly to other communities who arrived in France by "boat".

There are few accounts in contemporary theater of the "Boat People", the Asian communities who fled Vietnam and Cambodia after 1975, and settled in France and other Western countries as political refugees.

Marine Bachelot Nguyen first wanted to begin collecting testimonies and doing historical and sociological research on the subject of the Boat People. In addition to the dimension that allows her to continue exploring the history of Vietnam (already present in Les ombres et les lèvres or Circulations Capitales), it is also the history and birth of French and international humanitarianism that can be approached through this prism.
