It’s New Year’s Eve in Ostend. In a hotel lobby, a woman sits alone drinking bottles of champagne while wearing a monkey mask; revelers pass by laughing; and an actor arrives with his suitcase. That’s Minetti. Once famous. He has come to meet a theater director and reprise King Lear, the role of his life.
Treading a fine line between humor and pathos, Thomas Bernhard’s actor moves like a tightrope walker, as the final incarnation of a fragmented existence. Populated by grotesque characters, Minetti is a play about the impossibility of theater and the destruction of art.
