Inspired by the Judgment of Solomon, Brecht recounts an ancient legend in the form of a parable: the story of a kitchen maid, Groucha Vachnadzé, who gives up everything to save the governor's son during a revolutionary uprising. She becomes attached to the boy, whom she soon considers her own child. A few years later, back in her village, she finds herself at the center of a trial conducted by a strange judge. The child's biological mother, who had run off and abandoned him, is still alive and determined to find her heir. Should blood ties be preferred to those of the heart? What will be the outcome of the trial?
