Jeux de massacre no longer recounts the agony of one man like Le Roi se meurt: here, an entire city passes from life to death. Through the allegory of the plague, which embodies absolute evil, death that strikes everyone indiscriminately, Ionesco shows us a hecatomb.
Like the grimacing heads of fairground games, the burlesque puppets in this atomic-age danse macabre all fall, one after the other, while a black monk, the figure of death, silently crosses the stage, contemplating, indifferent, the disaster.
