The story of ordinary, unremarkable people, in short, who play their roles and hold their ground despite an uncertain future. They try to put into words who they are, what they have, and the place they occupy, even though they clearly know they no longer have control over anything. They are completely overwhelmed, vulnerable, and confronted with a visible reality that doesn’t match their narrative. They “have the right” to do so. So, faced with the tragedy that threatens them, they join their voices to say nothing at all. Together, they reassure one another—the “last of the human race”—cut off from the outside world, whose noises and shadows they perceive. They exchange what seem to them to be self-evident truths, simple observations. But these obvious observations (to them) gradually turn into total isolation, into a rejection of the other, of what is different, of the stranger. Then the mundane becomes the worst, and gradually, almost imperceptibly, everyday racism creeps in.
