Un virage pour Jacky

Add to my favorites

Jacky Medefo grew up surrounded by female role models: the women in his family in Cameroon, and then, upon his arrival in France at age eleven, Disney Channel heroines like Miley Cyrus and Zendaya. It was by watching them that he developed a passion for dance—all kinds of dance: traditional Cameroonian dances and hip-hop routines he learned in secret on YouTube, in his teenage bedroom.

In A Turning Point for Jacky, choreographer Magda Kachouche paints a vivid portrait of this extraordinary dancer, immense in both physique and talent. From hip-hop scenes to waacking—a dance born in African American queer clubs—Jacky reclaims what he was long mocked for: his femininity, his movements, his freedom. He dances the way little Jacky always wanted to be able to dance.

Influenced by multiple cultural heritages, pop culture references, and a desire for transformation, Jacky reinvents his masculinity, free from traditional masculine norms. Part intimate portrait, part choreographic exploration, A Turning Point for Jacky transforms the stage into a space of emancipation resolutely focused on the future.
