Umuko
Dances of Rebirth (Rwandan)
In 1994, Dorothée Munyaneza left Rwanda. She never forgot the umuko, the bright red tree of her childhood, healer and guardian of stories. With five young artists from her homeland, the choreographer summons its spirit here, blending traditional, urban and contemporary dance, poetry, song, percussion and inanga (ancestral string instrument). Together, they celebrate the ejo, the Kinyarwanda word symbolizing the encounter between yesterday and tomorrow. Thus carried by the momentum of a youth inventing a new Rwanda without forgetting the past, this luminous piece of joy reminds us that to create is also to be reborn.
