Popanz

Add to my favorites

Inspired by the world of German Romanticism, Popanz is the story of three theater stagehands who have fun with the power of fiction and with the fiction that is power. The tale of the Chat botté, a clever being who uses cunning to turn the instituted order to his advantage, serves as their common thread in this DIY laboratory. This Franco-German trio will twist this fable - and others like it - in every direction until they're worn out. They comment on and contradict them, disguising the true as the false and vice versa. Destruction here is a joyful task, contradiction a habit and negation a form of freedom.

In a constantly changing space, between a stage and a patched-up machine, a theater is set up that watches itself become fiction. Popanz, in German, means a puppet, a simulacrum, a double. Here, we play with both the theater and its popanz.
