Tumeur ou tutu

Add to my favorites

A story of emancipation in both its form and its subject matter, Tumeur ou tutu is a euphoric poetic blast, while at the same time questioning us about the hidden violence within the home, opening the door to the burning issue of the family, especially when it seems perfectly normal.

She says I, we don't know her first name, and from the age of 3 to 27 she tries to understand what's going on inside her, like a detective with a disconcerting and delightful sense of humor.

Between her mother's cries and the father's disturbing silences, she scrutinizes the language of adults and invents her own words, nicknames, mixes the lexicon to better say what she feels without fully understanding. The mother's psychological and sometimes physical mistreatment is not visible from the outside, and even when the child tries to send a few signals to the school or the parents' friends, no one cares because, after all, "it's none of their business".

As her quest for justice and fairness in words and communication is not enough to calm the "monster" tugging at her body and head, she turns to mathematics as she grows older, finding refuge in seemingly implacable logic. But life can't be reduced to an equation.

Even when love silences "the monster", the reproduction of violence emerges and there's no way out other than to look the gap squarely in the face, the only resolution to the equation.
