Sorcières / Kimpa Vita

Add to my favorites

Iconic figure of the African continent, resistance fighter fighting for her country's independence, nicknamed the Congolese Joan of Arc and self-proclaimed "sent by God", Kimpa Vita (1684-1706) inspires DeLaVallet Bidiefono to create an intense rock show.

Florence Gnarigo embodies this martyred woman, arrested, tried for heresy, condemned to the stake and burned alive. To text by author and director Dieudonné Niangouna, accompanied by music from Benoît Lugué, Marvin Jean and singer Dina Mialinelina, the dancer moves across a battlefield soon littered with glowing embers. Together, they weave an ode to women fighting oppression, and bring us back to universal questioning.
