Where does the exhilaration of beginnings come from? The first thrill of a love story, the first words of a scene, the discovery of a country, the first bite of a meal? This solo, co-created by Amrita Hepi and Mish Grigor, is a choreographic game that blends gesture and words to explore beginnings and what follows, when the momentum of initial emotion runs out and inertia sets in. Hepi travels from end to end, weaving together fragments of her own life with colonial history, the history of art, feminism and popular culture. Fascinated by the hybridization of forms, the bundjalung (Australia) and ngāpuhi (Aotearoa/New Zealand) dancer and choreographer unfolds her research in movement, celebrating dance as a site of memory and resistance.
