Reglas, usos y costumbres en la sociedad moderna

Add to my favorites

Although the writings of this playwright, one of the most widely performed contemporary authors in France, tend to distill melancholy, this play adopts a comic style to rewrite, with a healthy dose of irony, a manual of good manners written in the late 19th century. The book in question is Baroness Staffe's Les règles du savoir vivre dans la société contemporaine, which was a veritable benchmark of good manners in its day. From this material, Lagarce constructs a monologue in which he formulates a harsh critique of a society full of regulations that condemns us to stifling our own existences. He does so through the character of a teacher who offers us her lessons on how to cope with life's major events
