The sculptor Rubek and his wife Maja are staying at a sanatorium in Norway, after spending four years abroad. Despite the idyllic setting, they feel uneasy and their relationship is marked by mutual disappointment. One night, Rubek has a strange, ghostly vision: a luminous shape followed by an ominous shadow. When this silhouette reappears later in the garden, he recognizes Irene, the model who had posed for his major work The Day of the Resurrection, years before. After the completion of this sculpture, Irene had left Rubek, realizing that he regarded her as a mere object of creation, even though she loved him deeply. Her disappearance was the beginning of Rubek's creative downfall, and he never regained his inspiration. Having found her after all these years, the sculptor returns to his past and talks to Irene, but she makes him understand that she is dead and only a spectre...
