Drissa Diarra is a black boy. The year he turns 11, with his parents Issouf and Maryama, his twin Ramata and his little brother Seydouba, he moves into a bungalow in the provinces. Drissa dreams of his family as television blonds: the two cars in the garage, the Sunday dinners and, above all, the dog. And above all, the dog.
This desire for a dog becomes his obsession.
The baccalaureate, the driving license at 18 and dancing in nightclubs, all the banality of French youth is embodied in the canine's desired body.
Sister Ramata shaves her head to stop people talking about her frizzy hair, she doesn't know if she's pretty because the boys in her class don't grade her, and she's enraged at doing the dishes before homework, while her brothers and father do nothing around the house.
Around the twins, there are the friends they've almost always had: Mandela, a Haitian child adopted by divorced, white teachers, who grew up in Marseille, Karim a son of Moroccan workers. Everything could flow like the sometimes stormy river of minority lives, and eventually settle down. But Drissa is stubborn and wants to break down the barriers of banality for black boys. He insists on adopting a dog, he insists on going clubbing. "Give me one good reason why I can't be one" is his leitmotif.
