La Cage aux folles
In 1983, a cry of freedom rang out from Broadway to London and Berlin, heralding the triumph of a musical that claimed the right to a colorful life outside of convention.
Georges runs the nightclub "La Cage aux Folles". His wife, drag queen Zaza, aka Albin, is the star. One day, Jean-Michel, Georges' son from a former relationship, shows up: he wants to marry Anne, the daughter of an ultra-conservative family, and, to Albin's great disappointment, he asks Georges to come alone to meet his family. Albin is deeply hurt. But when the dinner party takes place at Jacqueline's house, he doesn't let it go...
Today a classic of the genre, Jerry Herman's musical offered us a hymn to the fight for more openness and fairness, and not just for the gay scene. In Barrie Kosky's production, the play becomes a timeless call to arms: be true to yourself and each other!
