La bonne âme du Se-tchouan
Three gods descend to earth in search of a "good soul" to prove that the world is not all selfishness and misery. They meet Shen Té, a kind-hearted woman who offers them hospitality. Touched, they reward her with a large sum and encourage her to persevere in her generosity. But this kindness attracts a host of opportunists. So she decides to create a ruthless male double, Shui Ta, to protect herself.
With La Bonne Âme du Se-Tchouan, Brecht exposes the contradictions inherent in a world where solidarity clashes with economic and social imperatives. Does our survival take precedence over mutual aid?
Nora Granovsky sets this work in a contemporary, desert-like, futuristic Se-Tchouan. She explores the mechanisms of domination, women's place in power and social injustice. Theater and music mingle in a committed show that makes Brecht's words resonate today.
