Juste la fin du monde

Add to my favorites

The play takes place on a Sunday. Everyone welcomes the return of the absent brother in their own way, and will express their feelings about the void Louis will have left.

Suzanne, the little sister has fantasized about an older brother she has barely known. Antoine's wife, Catherine, tells of the new family, the children Louis doesn't know. The mother, sole mistress of the household since the father's disappearance, has long since given up on Louis taking on the role of patriarch and has locked herself away in happy memories.
Antoine, who has had to become the new head of the family in spite of himself, will end up expressing his immense wounds. Although Louis seems to be the play's protagonist, the text shows us that the conflict is first and foremost between these two brothers, these two halves, one of whom has disappeared prematurely. Antoine's story is that of a dizzying sense of guilt: that of having made his older brother unhappy, of not having loved him enough, of having provoked his departure. But this feeling, so destructive for Antoine, only stems from a strategy of pathos created by Louis in his youth to protect himself from his own anguish at what he is, deep down. For Louis is different, and his selfish departure stems from an inability to thrive in this family he has not chosen. At the end of the day, Louis leaves without saying a word.
