Today, careers in the performing arts are increasingly threatened by budget cuts, which sometimes give the impression that everything we do as artists is useless or nonessential. Yet, when you work in theaters all year round, you know just how relentlessly the teams work and how much energy they pour into making the miracle of creation happen. It’s a real hive of activity.
When the Assoiffés d’Azur invited me to propose a play for this summer—a play for the troupe—I told myself I had to tell the story of what goes on behind the scenes. I wanted a play that speaks of a troupe—of all the difficulties a collective can face in the face of political pressures, production demands, and a lack of funds—but which, despite all that, continues to create, to bring beauty, and to forget the hardships when the curtain finally rises. For one evening, the troupe invites you to immerse yourself in the tumultuous rehearsals of Verdi’s famous opera, La Traviata, in a comedy by Jean-François Sivadier, directed by Alessandra Puliafico. Integrated into the chorus as a singer, the audience becomes a full-fledged protagonist in these rehearsals. Amid rivalries, blunders, outbursts, and moments of suspended time, the performers rehearse, search for their roles, and clash in a chaotic yet funny and deeply moving atmosphere, where the line between fiction and reality constantly blurs.
