I'm Fine

Tatiana Frolova continues to create poignant theatre of dissent, which is both understated and deeply political.

In 2024, We Are No Longer… marked the beginning of a story of exile forced by the war in Ukraine. Russian director Tatiana Frolova and the KnAM Theatre, now hosted in Lyon by the Théâtre des Célestins, are beginning a new chapter in their lives. How are they getting on? We’re fine. We’re managing… but not quite.

On stage, six figures waver and support one another. The ordeal takes its toll on the bodies of these uprooted people. Learning a new language, the distance and the loss of familiar landmarks. So, tending to a plant or holding up a potato to conjure up Russian dishes are all little rituals cobbled together to ward off the sense of loss. Archival photos and films enrich a meticulous work of remembrance, documenting the violence of Putin’s regime. Yet it is without succumbing to despair that Tatiana Frolova gathers these expressions of humanity – the tiniest details that resist resignation.
