(Petit Pays)

Dida Nibagwire and Frédéric Fisbach direct Gaël Faye's novel, transporting to the stage the story of a family exiled in Burundi, confronted with the events that will lead to the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda.

Gaby lives a happy childhood in Burundi, between a French father and a Rwandan mother. But in 1993, her parents' separation coincides with the start of the civil war that will lead to the Tutsi genocide. In 2016, Gaël Faye's first novel took a narrative approach to history. To adapt this searing text with the complicity of its author, Frédéric Fisbach and Dida Nibagwire have invited Rwandan performers to summon memory and convey the reality of their country's reconstruction. Blending speech, song and dance, Gahugu Gato (Petit Pays) questions the possibility of living together again. Designed to be performed outdoors, the show was performed in Rwanda, in Kigali and then in the hills where the genocide began, the thirtieth commemoration of which took place in April 2024.
