DAINAS (pron. daïnas)

How do we reconnect with origins that elude us? Born in Jelgava, Latvia, and adopted by a family in Reims at the age of 18 months, Dimitri Doré retains only vague memories of his native land, fed by nagging fantasies and obsessions. From these fragments, he set about creating an autofictional show, in collaboration with director Jonathan Capdevielle, a seminal encounter in his artistic journey. In 2017, Jonathan Capdevielle detected an astonishing maturity in the 19-year-old's acting and invited him to join his projects, introducing him to the wealth of artistic forms that make up his universe. In this new theatrical adventure, they explore Latvian culture together in search of Dimitri's fragmented heritage, tracing the story of his adoption and the shifting lines of his identity. This journey towards intimacy finds a particular echo in the dainas, short Latvian folk poems that sing of love, pain, nature and memory. In a subtle interplay between myth and reality, Dimitri metamorphoses into Oleg, a legendary Viking character capable of traversing ages and cultures, all mirrors of his own inner territories. Carried by a multi-disciplinary form blending song, dance and puppetry, this one-man show turns the actor's personal story into a multitude of narratives, which tell him as much as they tell us.
