South Africa was long shunned by the world because of apartheid. But when that system of segregation came to an end, Nelson Mandela—the activist who became president—worked toward the great reconciliation of the “rainbow nation.”

Despite this, extreme violence continues to plague the country, particularly against women. Among them, lesbian women—who have had access to marriage since 2006—are victims of an endemic practice: “corrective rape,” often accompanied by torture and murder. According to the rapists, these acts are committed with the aim of “re-educating” their victims and setting them back on the “right path.”
