Mer
Two eras converge; two women strike up a conversation during a brief moment that holds an element of the unexpected, with humour and sensitivity, in which the most intimate secrets are concealed and revealed…
Drawing on the confidences shared between two teenage girls who do not know one another and find themselves waiting for the bus together, Tamara Al Saadi explores the themes close to her heart: mother-daughter relationships, as well as grief and domestic violence. With her subtle and precise language and her perfect command of the stage, she tells us not of a rift but of healing, of the possibility of reconciliation. Through a sensitive lens that leaves room for humour, and driven by the actresses’ generous and energetic performances, misunderstandings pile up, secrets are revealed, eras intertwine and the fantastical bursts onto the scene. Mer was commissioned by the Théâtre Dijon Bourgogne – CDN from Tamara Al Saadi, an associate artist, to write and direct the play as part of the Passe-Murailles programme. These theatrical productions are designed to be performed in classrooms or non-theatrical venues. Each season, this initiative will enable the regional decentralisation project in schools to continue and extend its reach more widely across the region.
