In 1956, a young conscript was sent to do his military service in Algeria. It was a time of unrest, a war that had not yet been openly acknowledged. Isolated in a country he did not know, he began corresponding with the sister of one of his comrades. As the letters continue, a relationship develops and, a few days after his discharge, he marries her. A few months later, their first child is born.
Many years later, the now grown-up child tries to piece together memories of his mother, whose death leads him back to his parents’ correspondence. Year 2012: commemoration of the signing of the Evian Accords on 18 March 1962 and the declaration of Algerian independence on 5 July 1962.
