La Langue de mon père
Can a language be a life jacket? Can unearthing the words of one's ancestors shed light on relationships to one's family and identity? How does everyday racism sow shame and violence in individuals?
My Father's Language is the story of a woman who recently immigrated to France. While she waits for her papers, learning her father's mother tongue, Kurdish, takes her on a journey into the shadows of her past. As she learns this language, long forbidden in her native country, she begins to question her relationship with her father, whom she hasn't seen in years, and the everyday racism with which she grew up. During this mental journey between Turkey and France, she wears French as protection, a language that no one else in her family speaks or understands; a language she hasn't fully mastered.
