Technology has taken hold of us. It has permeated our flats and kitchens, transformed our roads, and thrown our lands into disarray.
Now, we are truly altered. Virtual entities beep at us, lecture us, advise us, call us to order, urge us on, scrutinise us, assess us, and spur us on.
We are overwhelmed by everything that chirps, everything that announces, everything that comments, everything that counts down. Our footsteps on the street, our heartbeats, our overdrafts, our connections, our consumption, the days we have left.
If we are to believe the endless whirl of figures, it is we who have been digitised: computed.
Our secrets, our thoughts, our seductions, our sins stand out in long strings of numbers, of codes, encrypted: which means that we can no longer even read them.
This noisy world is a desert. Amidst the din, our loneliness seems ever more vast, and the journey across it seems unlikely – to find, on the other side, a real arm to hold on to.
