*This Is No Place to Die* opens with the discovery of a corpse—that of a dog—by a young boy, the narrator. This psychological collision is conveyed through the very structure of the play, which unfolds to reveal a family entangled in its own drama, pain, shame, and silence. A family that believed it had to disguise the death of its son with a distant journey, turning it into a secret. A family living in the shadow of a corpse, whose relationships are entangled in the pain of memory. The disappearance of a son in a small village—and the secret it both creates and harbors—forms the framework of the play. One must move beyond this to discover the difficulty everyone faces in getting along with others, the impossibility of a peaceful relationship with the world, and the triumph of silence. This is not a story about the revelation of a secret, but about village rumors—and, at its heart, the difficulty of caring for one’s own. Failure lies at the center of everything—the world and the self. Everything is an acknowledgment of failure. Boronat writes about this failure, but he offers no resolution beyond poetic echoes that allow future audiences and readers to glimpse the impossible interplay of the worlds that constitute us, both socially and within ourselves.
