"Just before finding the only true rest, entering the definitive darkness that passed for coquetry with him but engulfed him at fifty-seven, Bernhard prepared the edition of this text, which is therefore his last publication. But it's a deferred publication, since this is a work from 1959, prior to the theater and novels initiated by Gel (1963). And indeed, In the Heights finally provides us with the missing link between early mystical poetry and the cynical imprecation that made Bernhard famous, between sentimental lyricism and over-the-top constructivism. It's all there already: these heights are also what Church Latin called in excelsis. But God has abandoned Bernhard's world, and his quest is already turning, gradually, into a frantic search for meaning through the very negation of all meaning."
