A Trial - after An Enemy of the People

Add to my favorites

In Ibsen's groundbreaking 1882 play An Enemy of the People, protagonist Thomas Stockmann faces shame and exile after attempting to expose a water pollution scandal at his hometown spa. More than a century later, Ibsen's work remains relevant, addressing the conflict between personal integrity and social conformity.
Jatahy's adaptation plunges Stockmann, played by Wagner Moura, known for his Golden Globe-nominated role as Pablo Escobar in Narcos, into a modern Brazilian public court where his fate will be decided. The lawyers and judges are conspicuously absent, and it's up to you, the audience, to decide whether he's innocent or indeed "an enemy of the people".
Transposing Ibsen's themes to contemporary Brazil, A Trial offers a sharp look at authoritarianism, false information and public judgment.
Always inventive and deeply political, Jatahy combines audience participation with filmed sequences, creating a one-of-a-kind show every evening.
