Lazare writes as one tells a story. In a theatrical, musical, and cinematic work conceived as an act of resistance against isolationism, he pays tribute to the character inspired by his mother, who has become the central thread of his work: Ouria.
The trilogy he wrote—an epic saga spanning several generations of a family divided between France and Algeria—laid the foundation for his work as an author and director. Drawing on his personal history, he explored the gaps in a narrative that had buried certain aspects of the colonization of Algeria. My Lead Actress(es) offers a new journey through these three plays, weaving a melodic thread that winds its way through the archives of their writing. Actress Anne Baudoux and musician-singer Mourad Musset once again portray Ouria and her son, Libellule. In a language that is vivid, embodied, and always imbued with poetry, the production pays tribute to this strong woman, who reveals nothing of the hardships she has endured. Lazare also explores the company’s journey and those years of writing, of life, of upheaval, and of emancipation.
