Maria Magdalena

Add to my favorites

Catalan director Carme Portaceli and Flemish director Michael De Cock deconstruct the myth of Mary Magdalene, who has been unfairly reduced to the status of a repentant sinner. To restore her reputation, they have created an immersive performance that blends all the arts.

Miriam, a literature professor in Brussels, has been fascinated by Mary Magdalene since her teenage years. Invited to give a lecture in Barcelona on this Christian saint—who went from being an apostle to the patron saint of prostitutes—she leaves her daughter behind and files for divorce from her husband. Upon arriving at the airport, she meets a surprising taxi driver who claims to be Jesus.... After Emma Bovary, Anna Karenina, and Mrs. Dalloway, Carme Portaceli and Michael De Cock now turn their attention to yet another mistreated heroine. Brought to life by performers from all corners of the world, the stage becomes a hybrid space where live music—featuring pianist Laia Vallés—coexists with video projections, dance movements, and paintings by visual artist Alessandro Arcangeli. Catalan, English, Portuguese, and Albanian coexist in this immersive, multifaceted theatrical experience, which challenges the patriarchal gaze and dominant narratives to give women a voice.
