La Fausse Suivante

A young woman, the Demoiselle de Paris, secretly disguises herself as a Chevalier to get a better idea of the man she is to marry, Lélio. She discovers that he is about to marry a Countess to whom he is in debt. Greedy and manipulative, Lélio meets the false Chevalier and instructs him to help her break the promise of marriage, by courting the Countess. When the subterfuge of the cross-dressing comes to light, the demoiselle de Paris finally passes herself off as her own suitor...

In this darker-than-it-seems comedy, profit, selfishness and manipulation far outweigh the sweet surprise of love so dear to Marivaux. Whatever their social status, the characters are driven by their own interests, not hesitating to use others to achieve their ends. Three hundred years after its creation, the painting of this individualistic society in which love, like everything else, is subject to the logic of profit, resonates with force!
