Peter Weiss's sweeping novel follows the journey of a young Communist worker between 1937 and 1945, from his native Germany to his involvement in the Spanish Civil War, to his exile in Sweden. But this itinerary of an anti-fascist militant is coupled with an aesthetic adventure: the narrator and his comrades practice as autodidacts analyzing great works of art, to discover a history of art in direct contact with social relations. Sylvain Creuzevault has shared the experience of this youth, caught up in the events of war and art, with the youth of today, Group 47 from the Théâtre National de Strasbourg school. The result is a flamboyant fresco, traversing different forms of struggle and theater (documentary, cabaret, agit-prop), knotting with rage and humor the struggles of the past to the urgencies of the present.
