Bérénice

Bérénice opens up multiple avenues of reflection for this artist whose theater questions European history, the pervasiveness of political discourse, but also the human dimension in affairs of state and current resonances with the repertoire. In this plot reduced to its simplest expression, the beauty of the language contrasts with the confusion of emotions in a love triangle. Titus, who loves and is loved by Berenice, faces a dilemma when he becomes Emperor of Rome on the death of his father, with the Senate rejecting any union with a foreign queen. Guy Cassiers pits a strong Berenice against the cowardice of Titus and his friend Antiochus, also in love with her, who will try to delay the implacable deadline of her departure.
