Baby Freeze

With *Baby Freeze*, Yves Mwamba draws inspiration from an iconic figure in breakdancing to revisit one of life’s earliest lessons: walking. Through falling, support, and balance, he creates a playful and poetic piece for young audiences centered on the conquest of upright posture.

A fundamental breakdance move, the baby freeze is often the first pose one learns: a way to find one’s footing, to negotiate with gravity, to suspend movement in a freeze-frame. Building on this simple and iconic move, Yves Mwamba creates—in a space of rare intimacy between dancer and audience—a solo that bridges the world of hip-hop with the motor explorations of early childhood. Both share a close relationship with the floor, with imbalance, with bounce, and with the joy of testing the body’s limits. Sliding, crawling, falling, starting over: movement is invented through trial and error. Drawing on the acrobatic richness of breaking, *Baby Freeze* turns vulnerability into strength and the fall into a playground. In this dance in the making—blending virtuosity, tenderness, and humor—the piece rekindles the primal sensations of a body discovering the world as it gradually learns to stand on its own.
