On the operating table, everything comes flooding back to Zélie. Summer, the sound of the waves, the taste of the sea. Her teenage years, too – those sweltering days when she chose her first name and decided to leave her parents’ home to begin her transition.
Today, she is piecing together the fragments – of who she was yesterday and who she is now, of her real self and her potential self, of herself as others see her and of the others within her. She navigates amongst the ghosts and, so as not to be swallowed up by the raging waves, she clings to what is clearest, most certain and most tangible to her: her own body.
